An exhibition exploring presence, nature and connection through paintings and ceramics

By Candlelight Exhibition

You’re invited to By Candlelight, an exhibition of watercolour, gouache and ceramic works exploring the meeting place between ritual, nature, and moments of connection. Drawing on the experience of being in candlelight, the exhibition considers how moments become sacred through presence.

It will be wonderful to have you join me in viewing the works on the opening night 11th Dec 6pm - 8pm at Montsalvat in the Residents Gallery.

The show will be open until the 10th Jan and can be viewed Wednesday - Sunday 10am - 4pm.

Lighting a candle can transform a space, inviting reverence and attention. It signals a shift from ordinary, linear time into a slower, more attentive way of being. While some works include candles directly, others express this same essence through images of music-making, prayer, dance and communion with nature. Together, the works suggest that there are many ways to ‘light a candle’.

The imagery is dreamlike and surreal, with dancing women, floating flowers, and skies busy with stars and birds in flight. Figures appear immersed in moments of presence; playing instruments, dancing or resting. Detailed and layered patterns reveal themselves through closer attention, inviting slow observation, allowing meaning to unfold gradually.

Recurring spiral motifs reference cyclical time and collective memory, symbolising an inward movement toward intuition and inner knowing, and an outward connection to lineage and ancestral wisdom. Connecting with candles, music and natural elements echo practices shared across cultures and generations, speaking to both personal and collective experience. By Candlelight invites viewers to step out of linear time, and into a place of presence and contemplation.
